What 3 Fictional Characters Are You?

Have you seen the challenge that’s floating around social media lately? People have been posting the 3 fictional characters they think most represents them, and it’s been so fun getting to see who everyone chooses. The fictional universe is a pretty vast space, so there’s quite a bit of possibilities; I’ve seen everything from Jasmine from Aladdin to Daria to Joey Potter from Dawson’s Creek.

But what I found even more interesting? The psychological aspect of it all. Seeing their picks is like a window into how they see themselves. It’s almost as if they’re showing you a piece of who they are, you know?

Then again, maybe it’s just meant to be a fun game and I’m reading far too much into it. Yeah, that’s probably exactly what it is.

But for what it’s worth, here’s how I see myself: Betty Suarez (Ugly Betty), Amy Farrah Fowler (The Big Bang Theory) and Ariel (The Little Mermaid).

Who are your 3 fictional characters, friends? Who do you think you’re most like? How do you see yourself?? Post your picks in the comments and if you share it on Twitter, be sure to tag me (@melissablake) so I can check it out!!! xoxo

Tuesday Tunes: Best TV Theme Songs

It’s like peanut butter and jelly. It’s like red beans and rice. It’s like cookies and milk. It’s like Twitter and hashtags.

Theme songs and TV shows just go together. The right jingle can send a show swiftly on its way — right into syndication heaven, no doubt. The best ones are uber catchy, the kind that stick in your head long after you switch off the television and the kind that you even find yourself humming as you go about your daily activities. At its heart, a theme song should do two things: Set the tone for the show and do a good job of summarizing the show’s plot. All with musical prowess, of course!! And WORDS. I can’t stress this one enough because an instrumental theme song is just plain sad. Who has time for that??

For this special edition of Tuesday Tunes, I give you five of my favorite TV theme songs of all time…

The Brady Bunch: Did you really think this one wouldn’t be on the list?? From those first note (you know, “here’s the story…”), we immediately become familiar with, well, the story. It’s like a Cliffs Notes version of the entire series. I grew up on this show in syndication and I loved humming it. Every. Single. Episode.

Frasier: At first, the lyrics just sound like a hodge-podge of nonsense words strung together, but I think it has a deeper meaning than that. Frasier’s a psychiatrist who is often confused and blue himself. He’s also a radio psychiatrist, so the line, “Hey, baby, I hear the blues a-calling…” just fits perfectly. I read a fun article about the story behind the song recently and it made such sense!

Gilligan’s Island: The story of seven strangers…NO! I’m not talking about that show! The show about Gilligan and company managed to take a single premise — an afternoon aboard a “tiny ship” — and streeeeetch it out over three seasons. Not to mention that the castaways always seemed to have new clothes, even though they only went on a “three-hour tour.” That’s some skill, if you ask me! I’d watch this show while eating breakfast in elementary school and it dazzled me. And that professor…?? Wow…

The Golden Girls: These gals were hip long before that foursome on Sex and the City strutted down the streets of Manhattan. Miami was never the same after Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia breezed into town. And, I’m sure, none of our friendships were ever the same after hearing said theme song!

The Big Bang Theory: I couldn’t help but throw a more recent show in the mix. The theme song sort of sounds like a prolific genius on speed, with all these thoughts and facts just flowing out in rapid succession. I wonder if that’s how Sheldon Cooper feels all the time.

So…which TV theme song is your favorite, friends? Do you find that some stick in your head and…they…won’t…leave? Any theme songs you absolutely hate?? xoxo

Love Lounge: Never Get Involved With Someone You Meet…

So here’s the thing: I may not be an expert when it comes to the ideal spots to scope out your soul mate. And I may not even know what exactly to say to said potential soul mate. But if there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s this: There are most definitely places where you DO NOT want to meet someone.

I call these places Danger-Zone Destinations. I like to think of them as being like minefields, only with high-tech and potently powerful lasers — remember that episode of The Big Bang Theory where the guys put motion-activated lasers in the apartment?

Yeah, it’s like that.

These rooms? They’re like those invisible lasers if for no other reason than their high deception rate. I mean, think about it: These places may look perfect from the outside, full of starry-eyed potential, but if you look just a little bit closer, you’ll start to see the cracks in the fairy tale facade.

Translation: Your romantic dreams are inevitably going to be shattered. I hate to be the one to have to break it to you (pun intended), but it’s bound to happen. Don’t believe me? I guarantee you, whether emotionally draining, full of morning-after regret or just a plain bad idea, these “hot spots” will ultimately leave you brokenhearted and out in the cold…

1. Online dating site: Let’s just start with the obvious one and get it out of the way first. This is, without a doubt, the holy grail of bad places to meet a beau. How do you even know you’re talking to a potential beau? You could be talking to some super-advanced computer bot who knows how to say all the right things. And even if you are conversing with an actual breathing human? Ever seen the show Catfish? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be kidnapped and taken to some freaky cult in a log cabin in the middle of the woods. But that’s just me — maybe I’m just too much of a prude.

2. Wedding: Oh, don’t even get me started on this one. Even I am incapable of resisting the allure of weddings. They have the power to hypnotize you and put you under their spell without you even realizing it. It’s romance personified. If it was a drug, it would be crack in its purest form — addictive, enveloping and intoxicating. You walk in thinking, “OK, this is it. The One is in this room. I can feel it.” It doesn’t help that all the elements are there to set a lovey-dovey mood: The magical ambiance, the romantic exchange of vows, beautiful people in fancy clothes, an open bar, the music, couples in love swaying to said music. You just want the chance at what everyone else has, right? That’s not too much to ask, is it? Apparently it is, because before you know it, you hopped yourself up on one too many caffeinated root beers and find yourself spilling your life story to the Best Man when he’s just trying to get out on the dance floor as the DJ leads a rousing rendition of the Conga Line. It’s not pretty, you eventually realize, and you leave the wedding the same way you came — at the end of your very own metaphorical Conga Line.

3. Jail: Well, I obviously don’t condone breaking the law and highly advise that you do everything in your power to stay out of the Big House. But if you should find yourself doing hard time, don’t make it any harder on yourself by falling for anyone. Remember, cell mates are not soul mates. And, really, there’s just too much baggage that comes with that territory.

So, there you have it, friends! Some important guidelines to keep in mind when driving down that expressway on your search for love. Would love to hear your thoughts and stories, and be sure to check out Part II tomorrow! xoxo

8 Fall TV Shows Worthy of My DVR

I like love TV. A lot. Probably more than I should. OK, definitely more than I should. After all, there’s this piece of evidence: I have some 135 “events” recorded and ready for my viewing pleasure. Then there’s this piece of evidence: I’ve recorded nearly 300 hours of programming.

300 HOURS.

It’s not as if I’m in desperate need of new shows, but here’s the thing: The new fall TV season is just ripe with possibilities. Honestly, I’m pretty powerless when it comes to resisting the allure and charm of a fresh batch of shows. I suppose it all started in the early days of Sesame Street, when I was easily mesmerized by Big Bird and Cookie Monster. Since then, my love affair with the small screen has only grown deeper.

This week marks the return of some of our favorite shows, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m fangirling pretty hard, actually. I used to type out my TV schedule, but thanks to technology, I can go digital. Here are the eight shows I’m buzzing about the most…

The Big Bang Theory: Never mind last season’s cliffhanger (holy engagement ring, Sheldon!), there’s something special about watching a show from the beginning — in the fall, you feel like you’re reuniting with friends after summer vacation.

How To Get Away With Murder: I love the surprising dark turns and sinister plot twists, typically orchestrated by law professor turned criminal mastermind Annalise Keating. I have a feeling things are only going to get murkier in season two.

Jane The Virgin: The complete opposite of HTGAWM, Jane is a cheery breath of fresh air, even if some decidedly un-cheerful things are going on around her. An accidental artificial insemination! A broken engagement! Multiple murders! Whew!

Supergirl: Not since the likes of Wonder Woman have we seen a strong female superhero swoop into our TVs. It’s about time, and I can’t wait for Supergirl to show everyone who’s boss!

The Muppets: Speaking of boss, Supergirl just might have a little competition in a certain self-confident pig. Yes, Miss Piggy, Kermit and the rest of the gang is back on primetime! I loved them as a child and hope that nostalgia factor is still there. And maybe a rousing rendition or two of Rainbow Connection. Ahh, the memories!

Scream Queens: The new project from Ryan Murphy looks like the perfect blend of Glee and American Horror Story. Perfect for fall nights curled up on the couch.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: I’d heard rumblings about this show, which follows a young woman as she moves across the country to win back her high school boyfriend. I was excited. Then I heard that it was going to be a musical. Now I’m REALLY, REALLY excited.

Limitless: A man discovers that he’s able to access his brain’s full capacity just by taking a single pill. Oh, the possibilities! Think of all the blog posts I could write…!

Are your DVRs set, friends? What shows are you looking forward to? Do you have a favorite show of all time? xoxo
