The World of Social Media and How We Communicate

Social MediaThe world of social media has taken us by storm and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. It allows many to voice our own opinions even when the public doesn’t ask for it. It doesn’t take much to sign up to any of the many social media platforms and begin a day of talking to whoever wants to follow you or like your comments. The topics can be on love, relationships, mental health, or what you ate in the last five minutes. Here are some things to keep people interested in your daily social media posts.

Consistency

There is nothing like finding a good social media post where you find yourself coming back for more to read. It also is not good when that post either disappears or you don’t hear anything from the author. If you are striving to have your voice heard, then you have to be consistent with your message. You’ll have to commit to posting several times a day or an hour. Followers come to either rely on what you are saying or depend on it for their own lives. Many look at posts as a way to get through problems in life or handle a tragic event. You’ll have to determine when to post on Instagram or your platform of choice. Your consistent opinions or advice can help your followers get through their day.

Originality

Try to post things that are original. It makes no sense to make stuff up as people will call you out and tell you what you’re doing. Originality rules and your followers will thrive on it because you are always giving them something new to think about. In order to stay original, you’ll need to keep yourself abreast of what is going on about the topic you are writing about. Don’t do anything halfway as it will be noticeable and people will get angry and post negative comments. Yet, don’t overdo it as you have to stand by what you are saying to the public. This means don’t try to be an expert on physics when you don’t hold a degree or have the experience. Read as much as you can on the topic you are talking about daily to give people fresh ideas.

Photos or Graphics

You can always insert photos in your social media posts to make valid points people can relate to. We are all visual learners at some point and social media is pushing that further. Pick photos that make sense and that you have permission to use. Most photos or even video clips that are funny have an owner. It’s not hard to find who owns what photo or graphic you want to post. If you do post without permission, then this creates problems for the entire social media timeline you’ve built in the last three to five years. This can be a daunting experience when people find out you really didn’t travel to Paris and those are stock photos.

Honesty

There is nothing worse on a social media platform you’ve been following for months than to find out everything is a lie. It’s not only the worst kind of lying, but it’s also that you knowingly did it on purpose. Some people get so caught up in the number of followers they have that their timeline goes from bad to worse. They are overwhelmed with the thousands of people that are living and breathing their daily words. However, not being honest in your posts cannot only get you banned from the platform, but you might also pick up a lot of trolls telling you about yourself. We’ve all seen these comments and most are not pretty, to say the least. You’ll be forced into hiding and trying to get on another platform if they will have you. Do yourself a favor and stay honest in all the posts you create.

These are some of the ways social media posts have changed how we communicate. There are things you can do to get better at it. Remain consistent in your posts and do it every day, if not once an hour. Stay original in your voice and do research on topics. Keep your posts honest and you’ll be successful in dodging the trolls.

5 Things I’d Love to See In The New TV Season

New TV SeasonMove over, Christmas!!! This may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m of the firm belief that September and October is the most wonderful time of the year!! Truly, you can go ahead and keep your sparkly tree and your perfectly wrapped presents with bows on top. For me, it’s ALL about the new TV season!

Right now, we’re deeply committed to watching every episode of NCIS. Seriously, I can’t get my mom to watch ANYTHING else — it’s all Gibbs, all the time around here!

I’m not complaining, of course, but I always think about the state of TV shows around this time every year. Partly because I’m still thinking about the on-the-edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers from the previous season. And partly because I like to daydream about what TV shows *could* be. TV is about escapism, sure, and Lord knows that we need some distractions in this current political climate, but TV is all about storytelling. At its core, it’s a medium that has incredible power to make powerful statements in a powerful way — the new TV season should be just as powerful too!

So, what would I love to see this year? Here are five plots and situations that would be aces in my book…

A time when there ISN’T a happy ending: Because, well, life isn’t always rainbows, sunshine and unicorns. Sometimes the storm clouds descend and it would be refreshing to see how characters would handle that. And I’m not talking about the kind of plot where the characters get into a jam and then — magic! — everything is resolved by the end of the episode. Nope. I’m talking about total unhappiness and things don’t get better.

Mental health is front and center: Today is World Mental Health Day, so this one is particularly timely. It’s time to shatter stigmas on the small screen, to pull back the curtain on something that so many people struggle with. No shame, remember?

More women with disabilities in leading roles: I wrote about this for Glamour a couple years ago and I’m still holding out hope for that role! I mean, not for myself — although, Hollywood, if you’d like to cast me, my schedule could be open in a hot second! Seriously, though, similar to mental illness, it’s time to shatter stigmas! Women with disabilities are ready for their close-up!

Musicals! Musicals! Musicals!: Maybe I’m just biased because I’m still obsessed with Glee and have watched the series TWICE so far, but there’s nothing quite like a toe-tapping good time in the form of music. And let’s not forget, you can express a lot with just the right song. Journey power ballads, anyone??

The fall of the patriarchy: This, honestly, is what I’m most excited about, particularly as House of Cards kicks off its last season on November 2nd (Claire Underwood FTW…) and the reality of our cultural landscape just seems to get worse every single day. Women will take over the world. Mark my words on that!

New TV SeasonWhat TV shows are you watching these days, friends? What are your favorite TV genres? What would YOU like to see during this new TV season?? xoxo

Have a Relaxing Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day WeekendCan you feel the glorious change in the air, friends?!? It’s…wait for it… MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!! Or, as I like to call it, the Official Kick-Off to Summer!! Because as we all know, there is nothing better than summer!!

I’ve been sick this week with some strange dizzy-flu illness, so I’m taking the day off today and enjoying a four-day weekend!! I’m sure I’ll be sharing my adventures on Twitter and Instagram (read: A Target shopping trip today! Score!), so be sure to follow along if you’d like!

Have I also mentioned the sheer number of blog post ideas I’ve been coming up with lately?? I’ve been saving them as drafts and I’m thinking June is going to be a VERY exciting month on So About What I Said. Look for posts about our new cat, an ode to a favorite restaurant, new CNN op-eds and…myself as an illustration!!

Indeed, fun times are ahead, friends! Thanks for being super patient with me this week, and don’t forget to raise an ice-cold soda for me over the Memorial Day Weekend!!! Hope it’s a relaxing one for you too!!!

P.S. Don’t forget to enter the Spring Print Giveaway if you haven’t already! Such a gorgeous print and quote, don’t you think, friends?

10 Lessons From 13 Years on Facebook

FacebookWow, 13 years on Facebook!!! Happy anniversary to me!!!

That’s a lot of status updates and meme sharing and vaguebooking. And, let’s be real, that’s a lot of late-night mindless scrolling!! While I’m by no means a Facebook expert, I have managed to learn a few things along the way. Here are 10 gems I’m thinking about today…

1. The world is smaller than we think: Facebook has made keeping in touch as easy as a few clicks of the mouse! Unlike some people who bemoan the FB’s negative effects on our social world, I actually think it’s great for relationships! There are people I haven’t seen for years, people who have moved to different states, but we’re still connected and keeping up with each other’s lives. That’s a beautiful thing, if you ask me!

2. It’s OK to unfriend (and block!) people: Yes, some of these people may be family (been there!), but you are under no obligation to keep people as your “friend” when they act like the complete opposite.

3. I’ll never understand poking: Is it subtle flirting? Just a way to say hello? What is it? Maybe Mark Z. should release a memo about this or something because I’m confused!!

4. Facebook envy is REAL: All those happy photos of people YOLO-ing on a sandy beach? Yeah, they can give me a case of jealousy sometimes too.

5. Don’t engage with the Trump supporters: In the name of full transparency, I haven’t mastered this yet. For some reason, I just can’t help myself…they all enrage me!!

6. If you mansplain anything to me, we’re done: Yes, this has happened! I’ve unfriended cheeky blokes who thought they needed to enlighten me. Turns out, THEY were the clueless ones!!

7. Bullying doesn’t end with adult: Sadly, I’ve been witness to far too much bullying lately, and even sadder? This bullying is done by women to women. It’s catty and vicious. GROW UP!!

8. Ms. Bear will always be my #1 Facebook friend: She’s just the cutest. For years, I tried to get her to join and she refused. Until 2008, and, well, she hasn’t looked back! Now, she spends more time scrolling than I do!

9. Umm, I actually like Twitter more: I know, that may be straight-up blasphemy, but Twitter is totally lit! I’m telling you — it’s a much more happening place!!

10. A Rick Astley meme makes everyone smile: Everyone’s favorite ’80s crooner lives on!! And I, for one, am never gonna give him up!!

FacebookSee? You’re smiling right now, aren’t you? Told you!! What do you love about Facebook, friends? Do you have a favorite social media platform? Oh, and be sure to follow So About What I Said’s Facebook here! xoxo

Calling All Cat Lovers: This Cat Furniture Is For You!

Cat Furniture Cat Furniture Cat FurnitureI’ll be the first to admit that, umm, Harry and Stella are pretty spoiled little felines! I mean, they have a huge box of cat toys and an $87 cat condo so they can sit and look out the window to their heart’s content. But…if they could talk, I’m pretty sure they’d be able to talk my mom into indulging them even more with some exquisite cat furniture made especially for their adorable, furry, teeny tiny bodies!

And lucky for us cat people everywhere, Japanese company Okawa Kagu is coming to the rescue with a new line of feline-friendly furniture to add the utmost sophistication and comfort to your cat’s life.

How cute is that?? Can you imagine your cat just hanging out on their favorite piece of mini furniture all day? And…you’re welcome for that little Thursday morning dose of “Aww!” xoxo
