My Kind-of, Sort-of, Maybe New Haircut

If you know me, you know that my hair history is full of, well, much of the same. I stuck with bangs long before the Hollywood starlets brought them back in vogue again and the rest of my thin, straight hair typically rested just above my shoulders.

Translation: I just always knew what I liked.

So when I posted the above photo on Instagram yesterday, I added this caption…

See my bangs and that strand of hair sticking out? THAT is why I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow!

Little did I know that I was in for such a traumatizing surprising experience when I stepped into my usual barbershop this morning.

After making small talk, I heard that dreaded five-word question: “So what were you thinking?“

I assumed the beautician was referring to my hair, so I rattled off my standard request. It’s a simple one, really.

“Can you cut the length to just above my shoulders and then trim the bangs?“

And that is where things get a bit hazy for me. I’m not sure if I blacked out from the stress or what, but the next thing I know, she’s talking about something called an undercut. Apparently, it will make my hair look less “heavy and bulky.”

Oh, wait. I should probably back up here and mention my tendency to get flustered and awkward in social situations when things veer off their expected paths. This, needless to say, was straight off the expressway and into the ditch.

Anyway, I gain the muster to say, “OK” and off she goes, snipping and sheering and even using some tool I’ve never even seen before.

The result? Are you ready?

Can you handle it?

Get ready…

Whew, what a relief. My hair has made its viral debut. I’m still not too sure how I feel about it, but perhaps it just all goes back to resistance to change. Or maybe it’s just the hair?

What do you think, friends? I’d love to hear your thoughts — and, of course, your own hairy scary stories! xoxo

Etsy Love: Fall Hair Accessories

I know we already talked about Fall Fashion 2015 last week, but I couldn’t resist sharing one more pretty trend: hair accessories. The whole flowers-in-your-hair look is typically such a summer staple — you picture long, billowing dresses matching the green or pink flower nestled in your hair. But, as I discovered on Etsy, there are so many fall-themed hair pieces — accessories full of reds and oranges and yellows. It almost feels like you plucked the leaves right off the tree, like in the gold leaf hair pin ($16), above. A few more of my favorites…

Burnt orange head wreath, $65…

Flower bobby pins, $14…

Mini floral comb, $34…

Rustic flower crown, $74…

Fall bridal hair crown, $33…

Wedding hair clip, $32

Would you wear this trend this fall, friends? How would you personalize the trend and make it your own? Which accessory is your favorite? xoxo

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Because nothing says Happy St. Patrick’s Day like a little almost-spring craftiness. Two of my favorites this year: The DIY shamrock floral crown, above, which would be a cute accessory for a garden party (random fact about me: I’ve always wanted to go to a chic garden party). And…

This DIY gold leaf manicure, because, honestly, gold makes everything better, doesn’t it? Happy day, friends! How are you celebrating? xoxo

P.S. Looks like Chicago isn’t the only city to celebrate the day by dyeing rivers or fountains green!

Throwback Thursday: I’m ahead of a fashion trend…

Oh, fashion, you can be such a fickle thing sometimes. You’re stripes one minute and polka dots the next. Neon shorts in summer and dark-hued sweaters in winter. Glitter eye shadow today and a total goth makeover tomorrow.

I’ll be the first to admit that it can be hard to keep up with it all, which is why I’m so excited for next week’s fourth annual Fall Favorites week on So About What I Said, but I couldn’t wait that long to share this little piece of breaking news: I’M AHEAD OF A FASHION TREND!!! (The all-caps is meant for extra, extra, extra emphasis). Yes, big bangs are set to be all the rage this year, according to fashion bible Vogue, and you know who pioneered this trend wayyyyy back in the ’80s, don’t you? No, not Anna Wintour…

Apparently, I was quite the little diva about it at first…

Then, as the years passed, I became more comfortable in my bangs-loving skin…

Until the day finally came when I learned how to rock school picture day with style…and confidence!

What do you think, friends? Something tells me I’ll be rocking this bangs trend for years to come. I mean, why change a good thing, right? What trends are you rocking right now? I’d love to hear about your fierce and powerful looks! xoxo
