If you know me, you know that my hair history is full of, well, much of the same. I stuck with bangs long before the Hollywood starlets brought them back in vogue again and the rest of my thin, straight hair typically rested just above my shoulders.
Translation: I just always knew what I liked.
So when I posted the above photo on Instagram yesterday, I added this caption…
See my bangs and that strand of hair sticking out? THAT is why I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow!
Little did I know that I was in for such a traumatizing surprising experience when I stepped into my usual barbershop this morning.
After making small talk, I heard that dreaded five-word question: “So what were you thinking?“
I assumed the beautician was referring to my hair, so I rattled off my standard request. It’s a simple one, really.
“Can you cut the length to just above my shoulders and then trim the bangs?“
And that is where things get a bit hazy for me. I’m not sure if I blacked out from the stress or what, but the next thing I know, she’s talking about something called an undercut. Apparently, it will make my hair look less “heavy and bulky.”
Oh, wait. I should probably back up here and mention my tendency to get flustered and awkward in social situations when things veer off their expected paths. This, needless to say, was straight off the expressway and into the ditch.
Anyway, I gain the muster to say, “OK” and off she goes, snipping and sheering and even using some tool I’ve never even seen before.
The result? Are you ready?
Can you handle it?
Get ready…
Whew, what a relief. My hair has made its viral debut. I’m still not too sure how I feel about it, but perhaps it just all goes back to resistance to change. Or maybe it’s just the hair?
What do you think, friends? I’d love to hear your thoughts — and, of course, your own hairy scary stories! xoxo
