P.S. Fun fact: Each color has its own name! 🙂
Creating layered outfits is so much fun; if you haven’t used this style much before, you should definitely give it a try. Invite some of your friends over, ask them to bring some of their favorite layering pieces and put together a fashion show. Once you figure out what kinds of layers you like to wear, you can shop for this season’s clothes and accessories to complete your look. Check out my four tips to get you up-to-speed on this fall’s hottest fashion trends…
Layers aren’t only for winter
You may have heard in school that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and your clothing and accessories are an area where you can see that principle in action. One of the best ways to make your outfits more interesting is to layer, wearing items on top of each other and creating an outfit that’s way better than each of the parts would be separately. The best part about layering is that there aren’t many rules, which means you can develop your own unique style and show off your personality through each of your layers.
Start with versatile basics
Your base layers are ones that don’t need to draw much attention, but do need to be versatile. Just like you pick a background color when you’re creating an art project, you also need to have a background for your outfits. This may be a pair of leggings, skinny jeans, or a long camisole. These items don’t go out of style, which means you can wear them for several years without worrying about whether you’re keeping up with fashions. In general, your base layers should be fairly snug to leave room for additional layers.
Add pieces that pop
The top layers are where you can really have fun and show off your personality. Play with different colors, textures and patterns. Sheer tops are cute on top of colored camisoles, and you can even add a vest or blazer to give an extra punch of style. When the weather cools down, wear a chunky knit sweater off your shoulder with a tank top peeking out underneath. On the bottom, bring back the ’80s with fun socks or leg warmers, or opt for a high-fashion style with a pair of tall boots over your leggings.
Don’t forget about accessories

It’s true: I can’t get enough of polka dots. And lucky for me (and maybe for you?), the polka dot trend is back in all of its dotted glory this fall. And by back, I mean really back. The trend can be spotted everywhere, no longer relegated to fancy dresses. Though I have yet to find a polka-dotted polo shirt (how very cool would that be?), plenty of polka dots are catching my eye. Here are just a few of my favorites…
