In The Pursuit of Happiness: Gina Rodriguez on body image

Speaking of self-confidence, actress Gina Rodriguez knows a thing or two about the struggle.

The Jane the Virgin star recently told PEOPLE that she’s regularly told that she’s not skinny enough or tall enough or even ethnic enough.

“As a woman in this industry, we are constantly being pressured to look a certain way and to get our hair and nails and makeup done and live up to these images that aren’t conducive to a healthy mind. But I have to remember that this is a game. And if the game says I should be looking like this, then I just don’t play that role. And that’s okay.”

It’s easy to fall for those lies, but thanks to her parents, Gina’s healthy and positive outlook is downright infectious.

“My mom is so beautiful and never wears any makeup. She would say, ‘You want a man to love you for who you are, not what you look like or what you’re covered up by.’ My parents really encouraged us to have confidence in who we are and accept who we are because it is not going to change and we are beautiful.”

This is definitely part of the reason that Jane the Virgin is one of my favorite shows this season. Gina is such a real, down-to-earth actress and that really comes through in the character of Jane, despite the out-of-this-world premise of the show. It’s so encouraging when you see celebrities being such good role models for today’s young people (does that make me sound incredibly old??), especially when there are some famous folks who tend to shy away from that role.

Go, Gina! Thanks for being such a body-positive voice for us all!!! xoxo

Body-positive ads

Marie Claire Australia asked six ad agencies to come up with the perfect print ads all in the name of self-acceptance. They wanted to teach women to love their bodies and see how creative the advertisers could get without any sort of restrictions. The results are pretty darn amazing…

Bravo! Aren’t these ads amazing? They really make you think about all the little subconscious things we do every day to sabotage our positive body image. No more! What do you say, friends? What will YOU do today to show yourself some love? xoxo

In The Pursuit of Happiness: The Brady Bunch’s Alice on body image

Growing up, one of my absolute favorite things was getting home after school and watching reruns of The Brady Bunch on TBS. Those Brady kids were always getting into some sort of trouble (“Oh, my nose!” anyone?), and, of course, they needed someone to set them straight.

Enter Alice, their smiley, all-knowing housekeeper who seemed to have an endless supply of blue uniforms and an ever more endless supply of energy — seriously, did that woman ever stop working? I was so saddened to hear of the death of Ann B. Davis, the actress who brought Alice to life from 1969 to 1974. And boy, what a character she was! Here, Alice’s wise words on the uselessness of diets…

“Whenever I feel like cheating on my diet, I weigh myself and then I cheat anyway.”

Amen! Don’t we all need an Alice in our lives? Did you watch The Brady Bunch as a kid? Who was your favorite Brady? xoxo

P.S. Did anyone else wonder why she and Sam never got married? And, where exactly was her bedroom? All the way in the back of the house? LOL…

Honest Selfie #4: Georgie’s story

This picture is me at our favorite antique store when I was shopping after-Christmas sales! I can not wear makeup due to severe skin allergies, so I’m used to being makeup free. What I love about myself? My LOVE of family. My family is my heart. I’m old-fashioned, so I think I’m a bit of a homebody too.

Now this picture was in the snow last week. We don’t get much snow in the South, but last week was crazy — no makeup, of course.
