So is this really the price of being ‘famous‘ these days?
As the dust continues to settle after the latest round in the Taylor Swift/Kanye West/Kim Kardashian kerfuffle, things are looking downright fierce and dangerous out there.
By now, we’ve all heard the he said/she said/no, she really did say it saga that will no doubt go down in Hollywood history as one of the greatest tales ever told (or spun by a publicist, depending on your personal bent): Kanye released a not-so-nice song with some very-not-nice lyrics in which he, umm, gave a “shout-out” to Taylor. Taylor fires back with a shout-out of her own, saying she never heard the song and was never given the opportunity to approve the lyrics. Kim Snapchat-bombs a series of videos that show Kanye and Taylor talking on the phone about the song in question prior to its release.
All this bad blood (see what I did there?) is freaking everyone out. There are tweets and hashtags and blog posts and memes and magazine covers. Oh my! This week’s Us Weekly is even declaring “It’s War.” This whole thing has become a cultural epidemic, I tell you, and everyone seems to have an opinion. You’re either Team Taylor or Team Kimye.
Now, you had to have known I was going to write about this. What kind of self-proclaimed pop culture aficionado would I be if I didn’t? Answer: A pretty lousy one! You probably even think you know whose side I’d choose based on my Taylor Swift Mega Super Fan status, but I’m a journalist by trade, remember? I can be objective about things. And this, my friends, is one of those things.
Let me just break it down for you: I’m Switzerland here. I know everyone is taking sides, but I’m not going to be throwing my hat in that ring any time soon. Because, let’s be honest here, OK? Not one person involved in this mess is innocent. Both Taylor AND Kimye are at fault here.
Whew, there I said it. What a relief to finally get that burden off my chest.
Anyway, the way I see it, Taylor had zero reason to lie. Trust is a hard thing to come by and once it’s gone — POOF! It’s gone. Forever. T-Swift is a girl who has always prided herself on her relationship with her fans, and she done them wrong — something I would never do, as I’m sure you can imagine. There’s something incredibly off-putting about being so disingenuous. Taylor should take the advice she’s been doling out all these years and just be herself. BE REAL. You earn a lot more respect that way, you know?
Kimye? Oh, this is one big hot mess of wrong too. I may be in the minority here, but I’ve always respected the Kardashians for their hard work and business savvy. I gave them their props because, despite what people would say about them, THEY WORKED IT and got you-know-what done. But there’s no denying the pure shadiness of Kim’s move. Yeah, so you’ve got the phone call on tape (which in itself is just weird and bordering pretty high on the Paranoid Meter), but what exactly did she hope to accomplish by releasing said tape? What was the point? It just made her loom petty, vindictive and immature. Surely she’s busy enough with her empire that she shouldn’t have to resort to these low blows.
Really, the more I thought about it, the more I began to wonder: What is all this really about? This need to sabotage and cut other women down? All for what?
Girl-on-girl hate.
I suppose it’s similar to the Myth of the Mean Girl that I was talking about a couple weeks ago.
Why can’t I be me and you be you? Why can’t we mind our own business and just focus on ourselves. In the long-run, it doesn’t matter what the Joneses are doing — or, in this case, the Kardashians.
In the end, you may get yourself heard and have all eyes on you, but guess what? You’re going to look like a damn fool doing it. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have any time or energy to waste on that.
Thoughts??? Whose side are you on? These choices need to be made, people! xoxo

I am pretty "Switzerland" in this case as well, but you said how I'm feeling way better than I could. And yes, the video of the phone call was creepy and paranoid. Still don't understand that bit.

Yeah, who records their phone calls??? I mean, it's not like Kanye's the FBI…as much as he thinks he is lol

I support your right to weigh in, but– really?? This pop culture feud is so incredibly petty and moronic, whilst people around the nation are getting shot and shooting others, more and more often, and really digging in (violently so) on the issues that matter.
I think any insignificant, pop-culture incident just serves to distract from the important issues that are at stake right now. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the issues that actually matter.
Do you care about the RNC or DNC? I'd love to hear your thoughts on those.

Hi, Alex… Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it…I always try to make my blog a mix of the serious, weighty issues and these more light-hearted posts.
I've actually got a DNC post planned for Thursday! Stay tuned! 🙂
