This BuzzFeed quiz told me I’m a pretty awkward person, so it must be true, right? I mean, let’s face it, I’ve had my fair share of awkwardness in my day (helllllooo, boys…), so maybe this “breaking news” shouldn’t come as such a surprise after all.
Case in point: Take last week, for example. I spent the day at my old stomping ground. Part of the building had been remodeled, and I was checking out the new digs.
“Oh, the art gallery,” I thought to myself. “Let’s go take a gander…” (and yes, I do have this sort of dialogue in my head all the time. And yes, I do use the word gander quite frequently).
So into the gallery I went. It was a pretty small space, and it was just me and the student worker. Well, fast forward a few minutes, and what do I do? Have an unfortunate run-in with a glass wall. Yes, my awkward self mistook a glass wall for the door. I slammed right into said glass wall — thank goodness that my wheelchair basket acted as a sort of buffer.
“Are you OK?” asked the student worker.
“Oh, I’m fine,” I replied nonchalantly as if the whole thing was no big deal — you know, as if getting face time with glass walls is such a regular occurrence for me. Now, when she asked if I was OK, I wasn’t sure if she was wondering about my physical state or the newly minted metaphorical bruises slapped on my ego. I didn’t know. And I surely wasn’t going to stick around to find out.
Instead, I did the only logical thing I could think of doing at the time: I zoomed out of there at a pretty high speed — making sure I used the door, of course.
But the whole experience, as embarrassing as it was, got me thinking. We’re so quick to feel awkward and feel our cheeks turn a bright, blushing red (in my case, my cheeks probably turned even redder than my blazing-red hair…) — are we jumping the gun on things? Aren’t we the ones who end up more embarrassed than the people around us? At least that’s what I’m going to tell myself in this situation.
Have you done anything awkward lately, friends? Are you an awkward person in general? How do you handle those awkward situations? Do you let them roll off your back, or do you tend to obsess over them? Let’s chat! After all, we’re all in this awkward boat together, right…?!?!? xoxo
