How To Be a Nonconformist

A few weeks ago, my mom bought one of those hair straightener thingies because, as she said, her hair was just out of control. I couldn’t help but tease her that she was going to become one of those Beatniks from the ’60s — remember that scene in the original Hairspray (not the one with Zac Efron) where they’re straightening their hair with an actual iron?

Well, something tells me my mom could pick up more tips on being “in” with the counterculture with the help of Elissa Jane Karg’s How To Be a Nonconformist, her 1968 how-to of black-and-white drawings. Karg was only sixteen (wow!) at the time, and she mused on everything, including…

Dress…

Footwear…

Pastimes…

Overall attitude and outlook…

How funny is this? It must have been the hipster equivalent of its day. How would you measure up, friends? Would you have been a nonconformist? xoxo

Ha! This made me laugh. I guess that it all comes down to having enough courage to follow your heart and instincts, ignoring any type of social standards. I'm not sure about the cynical/negative portion of it, though. Thanks for sharing this! 🙂 Xo,

So About What I Said is a daily blog that covers relationships, disabilities, lifestyle and pop culture. I love to laugh and have been known to overshare. I also have an unabashed obsession with pop music, polo shirts, and PEZ dispensers. Read more...
