I’d love to know, friends: What does feminism mean to you? There are so many different meanings attached to that one word. But perhaps even more controversial over the years has been the debate on who exactly qualifies as a feminist. In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, everyone’s favorite funny girl Zooey Deschanel described what feminism means to her…
I’m just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say. We can’t be feminine and be feminists and be successful? I want to be a f–king feminist and wear a f–king Peter Pan collar. So f–king what?
I’ve always loved Deschanel’s refreshing honesty, and there is so much truth in her quote. Yes, a woman can be a bow-and-glitter loving girly girl and still be a feminist. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The way I see it, it’s all about how you carry yourself.
What do you think, friends? Let’s chat! xoxo
P.S. I’m loving Deschanel’s site HelloGiggles too! 🙂

being a feminist is to hold women in equal regard to men, and empowering women to make whatever choices they want and supporting them in those choices – whether it be to run a company or raise 10 kids.
one of my biggest peeves is hearing anyone, especially women, say things like, "i'm not a feminist or anything, but…" we should ALL be feminists! men included. i am a feminist, my boyfriend is a feminist and i will raise my son to be a feminist too.

When I was an RA in college I was asked to present an educational program during women's history month. As part of the program I got large sheets of paper and posted them on each floor of the boys dorm and girls dorm. On each I posted a question and rotated the papers each week in the dorms. The conversations got heated. The one that suprised me the most was the on the papers I asked "what is a feminist." In the boys dorm it was unanimous. A feminist was a "dyke". In the girls dorm a huge war of words boke out. The negativitiy, hatred for feminists, and utter lack of repect for women by women was astonishing. I'm a girl who likes heels. I wear red lipstick and love cute things. I'm a feminist. When I'm asked who what is a feminist I will always say this: a feminist is a person who thinks women should have equal rights, get equal pay, and be treated with the same respect that you would would treat any person. If you believe this you are a feminist.
