Friends, you know I have a thick skin, both literally and figuratively. I can take most anything people dish my way. But the one thing I simply will not turn the other cheek and ignore?
Blatant and offensive language, like the language this commenter left me yesterday…
There is no possible way for anyone to brush aside your deformity and pretend it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t just overshadow everything. It eclipses it. If a person with a club foot came up and started talking to me, I would not be able to process anything they said. Not until we first discuss the club foot. I’m afraid most people are amused by the disabled. It’s a guilty pleasure we know it’s not right to enjoy, but do anyway. Besides, who wants to be charmed by a cripple?
Oh, no. This is not 1950. Using the word cripple is simply not OK. Ever. Frankly, using it just shows how stupid, pathetic and ignorant you are. Isn’t it sad that there are still people in this world thinking like that, friends?
P.S. And forgive me if my charm just might leave you with a little bruise or two. But don’t worry. Unlike you, I won’t call you that nasty word.

I don't know of anything I dislike more than a bully. Once again, (And I'm sure its the same person who leaves snarky comments on other posts) I am completely disgusted that someone would take the time to write such nasty words to you. It's sickening, and the truth is probably that they are lacking something in their life to cause them to act out like that.

Amen girl. I'm disabled myself and I remember back in high school a kid in my class drew my name out of a hat to go next in whatever we were doing and he said "great, I picked the cripple." It's ridiculous and pisses me off like nothing else, but I'm glad we're better than that and you are such an inspiration.

Jennifer, I don't understand how people can be so damn ignorant. Something similar happened to me. It was my first junior high dance…I didn't really want to go, but thought I'd try it, even though I didn't have a date.
Midway through the dance, a boy walks past me and snickers "want to dance?" under his breath. It was all I could do NOT to punch him.

Melissa, you run a wonderful blog. Don't let these people get you down. I have been following it for sometime now and I admire the courage, determination and guts you have for writing everything down in a public space. Your blog also has a v. beautiful, nostalgic sort of feel to it :)Sometimes we don't see eye to eye on relationships, but I think it's just plain disrepectful and moronic that people do write crap like this to insult you. I can tell you this about them though: They are sad, pathetic and weak. Weak because they need to pick on someone, pathetic because they spend hours reading and commenting on your blogs even though they say they wouldn't be able to talk to a disabled person and sad because they're so scared to be different. Malissa, I'm a nearly 50 year old man with minor Cerebral Palsy, but like your ever so insensitive commentor, I can walk, talk normally, and even chew bubble gum while walking. However, unlike him/her, I can't find it in my heart to be so black-hearted. He/she is a person with no humanity or kindness in his/her soul.
