Letters To My Future Husband: Letter #57

Dear Mr. Melissa Blake:


I decided my blog anniversary was as good of a time as any, so I’ve been reading the first 55 letters I’ve written to you over the last year. I know it may seem like a lot – it seems like a lot to me – but I am a writer, remember? You knew that (hopefully!) when you married me, Sweetpea.

But I honestly feel like I’ve done you somewhat of a disservice. I’ve always meant for these letters to be a story book of sorts, but in reading them, I can’t help but feel like I’ve jumped around a bit.

So to that end, why don’t we start at the beginning. The very beginning. The beginning of our individual stories. Because as much as I talk about you and me and our lives together in these letters, we both have a past and had lives (mine was pretty exciting) before we met each other. And the way I see it, for our life together to be a smashing success, we can’t forget who we are as individuals. OK, I’ll just be honest here: I’m trying to say in a nice and kind way that should we fall into the 50 percent of marriages that don’t work out (we won’t right?), frankly, I’ll keep reminding myself that I had a life before you, and I’ll be damned if I don’t have a life after you. I hope you feel the same.

I can’t wait for the day when we can giggle at our baby photos together, so for now, I have no shame in giving you a little sneak-peek by putting myself on display. I should have been a baby Ford model, shouldn’t I? I know. What sort of baby were you? Because you know, your temperament as a baby tends to be a pretty good indication of the sort of adult you’ll turn out to be. I’m just saying, Sweetpea…

    maybe if you don't want to make a book yet, you could at least make a book of these letters and just give it to that special someone as a book. I love reading these; and your baby pictures are adorable. I did not say happy anniversary to you, shame on me, this past weekend was soo hectic!
