Editor’s Note: Welcome to day two of my week of debuting some new features on So about what I said…! Today, friends, I introduce you to Mind of a Man, where I’ll call upon men the world over (OK, not really the world over, but the lucky ones!) to give me a little insight into how that beautiful, yet mystifying male mind works.
So, meet Erroin, a sweet and charming business man (what better combination is there, really?), and take a look at what he has to say on the sheer power and intensity of a glance, of seeing, really seeing someone for the first time. My question to him: “Are you single?”
Do You Know That Feeling? Being In Love? Of course you do. We have all loved and have been loved by our parents, our friends, and our extended families. We may even be in love right now with a significant other whom has swept us off our feet and landed. Yet this is not the love that I speak about.
What do I mean?
Well I speak of an intensity that you feel when you initially gaze into the eyes of someone the fates have placed in your path. It could be a sideway glance on an airplane. It could be an exchanged smile with a complete stranger on passing escalators. It could be sharing looks on the subway, bus, or train. The moment can occur when you cross a crowded room. Where or when does not matter, it only matters that you catch each other’s eyes. Yet, it usually happens in places where we normally pass.
Then it happens, and you can feel your heart race. A racing that you only feel when your mind and body begin to synchronize like when you first discovered a boy or girl that you liked. It is not a fearful beat that pounds hard and loud in your chest. It is the beat of beauty and desire. A rhythm that wishes to express itself to the world and everyone that is around you. A passion you have not felt before is running through your body making you feel more alive and in the moment. Everything in your body feels as if it is in a rush.
That is also when you notice that time seems to slow. Your senses seem to counter the rushing your heart pounds in your body. Your senses reach out and take in your entire surroundings. You begin to notice everything in greater detail. The untold scents that you normally ignore become more profound. The lighting of where you are at takes on an intensity that you have never seen before. Each sounds is clearer than before. Your skin does not only feel what it is touching, but seems to reach out in the air and feel the presence that surrounds you. It is in this moment in time you are fully alive, bathed and wrapped tightly by the world around you.
It is amazing how this can happen. It always seems that it happens when you never expect it. Like a shock to the system, life reaches out and smacks you across the face to get your attention. It shouts at you,”Look at the beauty around you! Look at the beauty in front of you!” You answer back by looking, feeling, hearing, and smelling what is around you. In that moment, the person across from you is the most beautiful life-enhancing experience you have ever felt. Life has placed you in a spell that allows you to see briefly the amazing intricate web of the universe.
Abruptly it is broken. The doors to the subway open and you step off the train. Your passing on the escalator is brief as your arrive to your floor. Your view on the plane is obstructed as your row fills with other passengers. Your rational mind wakes from your romantic dream and jerks you back to life.
My Mother claims that what this experience happens to be is nothing more than a crush… an infatuation. Those are feelings you have when you cannot understand what it means to be in love. A crush is something you carry because you actually converse with the person… you know them. An infatuation is akin to a crush but you are to scared to talk to the person that is around you on a daily basis. This is not a crush or an infatuation. No, my mother is wrong; this is a unstained innocent love.
Yes, it is a love that is shared between two unknown people and reaffirms our belief in life. It is a love that expounds upon our desires to feel connected, noticed, appreciated, and part of something greater. It is a love that I am willing to embrace when it happens and I never actively seek.
So I embrace the moment and introduce myself. That can make a life-changing difference.
